Guinea pigs are hystricomorph herbivorous rodents, which become a popularly kept companion animals. A recent study describing disease prevalence in 1000 pet guinea pigs found that the prevalence of dental disease in guinea pigs was 36.3 per cent. Abscesses of odontogenic origin in guinea pigs pose a serious health problem and need to be treated with a combination of medical and surgical therapy. The aim of the article is to describe a preferred authors step-by step management of the odontogenic abscesses in guinea pigs. Apicoectomy is preferable over entire affected tooth extraction, if possible. Apart from supportive care, meloxikam, buprenorphine and combination of fluoroquinolones and metronidazole are administered.
